At Bloomy Days as flower delivery service, Valentine's Day is one of the busiest periods in our calendar. We undertook this study after noticing sharp differences in the sums of money customers are willing to spend on Valentine's bouquets, depending on the city from which they place their order. With customer budgets on our mind, we wanted to investigate how much costs differ for popular Valentine’s gifts, including flowers, across the world.
To carry out the research, we investigated the costs for the most popular romantic activities in 50 cities worldwide. These included a trip to the movies, a dozen roses, entry to a spa, a meal in a Michelin star restaurant, and a night in a 4-5* hotel. We standardised the factors ensuring consistency across different cities and countries, to create a fair and accurate representation of the price comparison.
The default ranking is sorted by total price, however the table can be sorted by each individual factor, so you can find the perfect city to start planning a romantic weekend away.
|#||City||Country||A Dozen Red Roses||Day at a Spa||1 Michelin Star Dinner w. Wine||Cinema Tickets w. Snacks||Night in a Luxury Hotel (4/5*)||Total|
To create the ranking we first chose the most common activities for Valentines then used the following methodology:
Flowers: We looked at the cost of a dozen roses, both in several online retailers and at least 5 flower shops across different parts of each city.
Spa: We found the top 3 ranked spas and wellness centers in Tripadvisor for each city and then averaged the cost of a day pass for two people.
Dinner: We researched the price of dinner for all Michelin star restaurants in the city, where available and then averaged the cost of their full course Valentine’s Day special meal for two plus wine. In regions where the Michelin star system is not in use, we selected restaurants which met similar requirements in equivalent guides.
Movies: We looked at the price of going to the movies for 2, plus popcorn and a drink in at least 3 movie theatres in the city and then we averaged the price.
Hotel: As going to an upscale hotel for the night is widely practised for Valentines, we looked at all 4 and 5* hotels for that day in each of the cities ranked and got the average cost of a night for two, in a regular room.
We followed a simple formula by averaging the cost of all factors and based the total ranking on an average cost of all these factors.
